Mitchell L. Nichols Sr. was born on April 9, 1974, in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Growing up in Emporia, Virginia, Mitch, as he was affectionately known, was a cherished member of his community and family. He peacefully transitioned to eternal rest on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Chippenham Medical Center.

Mitch was the beloved son of the late James Webster Nichols and Ellen Nichols Suggs. He grew up in a loving family alongside his siblings and was a proud graduate of Greensville County High School. During his high school years, Mitch's passion for sports was evident, as he excelled in both basketball and football. His leadership skills shone brightly when he served as the captain of the Greensville County High School Football Team during his senior year in 1993.

After completing high school, Mitch attended Virginia State University, where he majored in Criminal Justice. He continued to nurture his love for basketball by participating in intramural games, which brought him immense joy. Through his studies, Mitch discovered a profound passion for helping at-risk youth and began mentoring them at an early age. His commitment to education led him back to Virginia State University, where he earned not one but two master's degrees—one in Project Management and another in Interdisciplinary Studies.

In 1994, a significant chapter in Mitch's life began when he met the love of his life, Bertina Thornton, at Virginia State University. Their love story blossomed, culminating in their marriage on March 20, 2004. This union was blessed with two sons, Mitchell L. Nichols Jr. and Jayden I. Nichols, who were the pride and joy of their parents.

Mitch's professional journey was marked by his dedication to youth and family services. His work history includes roles at Youth and Family Advocates LLC, Intercept Youth Services, Chesterfield Detention Center, Chesterfield Basketball Association, and Chesterfield Volleyball Association, where he served as a referee. Mitch was an assistant coach for Meadowbrook High School Varsity Basketball team for two consecutive years. During this time, he had the pleasure of coaching his two sons. He also worked as a Contract Specialist at Defense Logistics Agency-Aviation Richmond. Notably, Mitch volunteered as a coach for the Chesterfield Recreational Basketball League and the Black Top Kings and Queens Basketball Association, further demonstrating his unwavering commitment to supporting and mentoring young people.

Mitch proudly joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, as an inaugural brother for the Upsilon Chi Sigma Graduate Chapter in Chesterfield, Virginia, in March 2024. His commitment to the fraternity's principles of brotherhood, scholarship, and service was a true reflection of his character and values.

Mitch's hobbies included fishing, cornhole, cooking on the grill, playing "Words with Friends", and attending various sporting events.

Mitch leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones. He is survived by his loving wife Bertina Nichols; two sons Mitchell "MJ" Nichols and Jayden Nichols; three siblings; and a host of other family members and friends.

Although our hearts are heavy with loss, we find solace in knowing that Mitch is at peace in Heaven, reunited with his parents, his brother Martin V. Nichols, and his sister Michelle Nichols.
